Adhesives & Bonding Agents

Construction adhesives and bonding agents are chemical systems used to create durable, load-bearing bonds between concrete, mortar, tiles, and other construction substrates — including the critical interface between existing hardened concrete and freshly placed repair concrete or overlay — where mechanical continuity across the bonded joint is required for structural performance.

CFC Egypt manufactures the EGYBOND range of bonding agents and the EGYTILE range of tile adhesives and grout at our Sadat City facility. EGYBOND EP epoxy bonding agent provides high-strength structural adhesion for concrete repair and overlay applications where a high bond strength is required. EGYBOND SBR, EGYBOND L, and EGYBOND Latex are SBR-based bonding agents that offer a cost-effective solution for general repair, screed bonding, and old-to-new concrete interfaces. The EGYTILE range covers cementitious tile adhesives — from standard wall and floor grades through to improved, slip-resistant, and large-format adhesives — plus the EGYTILE CG2 cement-based tile grout for filling tile joints and the EGYTILE R2 solvent-free epoxy tile adhesive, all referencing the relevant EN standards.

01

What It Covers

Adhesives and bonding agents for construction span three distinct application groups — structural bonding agents for concrete-to-concrete interfaces, latex modifiers for general repair, and tile adhesives and grout for ceramic, stone, and porcelain tiling.

01

Epoxy Bonding Agents

EGYBOND EP is a two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin applied to the prepared old concrete surface before placing fresh repair concrete, repair mortar, or a structural overlay. The cured epoxy layer develops a high tensile bond — helping the repair system behave as a monolithic composite rather than delaminating under load. Used in structural concrete repair, bridge deck overlays, precast connection joints, and industrial flooring where bond failure is not acceptable.

02

SBR Latex Bonding Agents

EGYBOND SBR and EGYBOND L are styrene-butadiene rubber latex emulsions used as bonding slurries and mortar modifiers. Applied as a primer slurry — cement and EGYBOND mixed to a cream consistency and scrubbed into the prepared substrate — they improve adhesion of repair mortars, render coats, and floor screeds to existing concrete, masonry, and brick. EGYBOND Latex is a pure latex modifier for cementitious mixes, improving flexibility, water resistance, and adhesion of the modified mortar. Must be applied while still wet and tacky; do not allow to dry before applying the fresh material.

03

Tile Adhesives & Grout

The EGYTILE range covers cementitious tile adhesives (EN 12004) for ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone installation in internal and external applications. EGYTILE C1 is the standard cementitious grade for wall and dry floor tiling. EGYTILE C1T and C2T are slip-resistant (anti-slump) grades for vertical tile work and large-format, stone, and marble tiles. EGYTILE CG2 is a coloured, polymer-modified, cement-based tile grout (EN 13888) for filling the joints between tiles, with high mechanical strength, colour stability, and water repellence. EGYTILE R2 is a three-component, solvent-free epoxy tile adhesive for chemically resistant applications in laboratories, food processing, and industrial wet areas.

Where They're Used

Bonding agents and tile adhesives are essential across building repair, renovation, and new construction wherever one material must be durably adhered to another. The following applications represent the most critical bonding requirements in the regional construction market.

Old-to-New Concrete Bonding

Concrete repair and overlay applications require the new material to bond monolithically to the existing substrate. Without a bonding agent, the interface between old and new concrete is a plane of weakness prone to delamination under structural loads and thermal movement. EGYBOND SBR slurry provides the economic solution for most repair and screed applications; EGYBOND EP epoxy bonding agent is specified where structural performance of the repair is critical — heavily trafficked floor repairs, bridge deck patches, and load-bearing structural repairs.

Wall & Floor Tiling

Cementitious tile adhesives from the EGYTILE range provide the correct bond for ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone installation in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Standard grades (EGYTILE C1) suit interior wall and floor tiling. Improved grades (EGYTILE C2T) are designed for big-size, high-quality porcelain, stone, and marble installations where thermal movement imposes greater stress on the adhesive joint. The anti-slump T designation ensures tiles do not slide on vertical applications before the adhesive sets. Once the tiles are fixed, EGYTILE CG2 coloured cement-based tile grout fills the joints with high mechanical strength, colour stability, and water repellence.

Screed & Render Bonding

Bonded screeds applied over existing concrete substrates — for levelling, falls to drain, or as a wearing course — must achieve continuous, intimate contact with the base slab to transfer loads without delamination. EGYBOND SBR slurry, brushed vigorously into the prepared substrate and overlaid while wet, dramatically improves the adhesion of cement:sand screeds and enables thinner bonded screed sections. Latex-modified renders (EGYBOND Latex added to the mix) improve adhesion and reduce cracking on masonry and concrete facade surfaces.

Swimming Pools & Wet Areas

Swimming pools, spa areas, shower enclosures, and commercial kitchens require tiling systems that maintain full performance in permanently wet or intermittently submerged conditions. EGYTILE C2T provides the bond for fixing porcelain and stone in these areas, while EGYTILE CG2 cement-based tile grout fills the joints with high water repellence and colour stability — important where the joints are continually wetted. Epoxy tile adhesive EGYTILE R2 is specified where chemical resistance is required in food processing, pharmaceutical, or laboratory environments.

Structural Concrete Repair

Structural repair of reinforced concrete — columns, beams, slabs, and foundations where concrete has been removed by carbonation, chloride attack, or impact damage — requires the new repair mortar to develop bond strength at least equal to the tensile strength of the substrate. EGYBOND EP epoxy bonding agent applied to the prepared substrate ensures that the repair mortar anchors to the structure rather than relying on mechanical interlock alone, enabling the repaired section to carry its full design load without risk of debonding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical and commercial questions on construction adhesives and bonding agents answered plainly. For a specific application or substrate recommendation, contact our technical team.

A bonding agent is applied to an existing hardened concrete substrate immediately before placing fresh concrete or repair mortar on top. Without a bonding agent, the fresh concrete or mortar will not develop adequate adhesion to the old surface, resulting in a plane of weakness or delamination under load or thermal movement. SBR latex bonding agents (EGYBOND SBR, EGYBOND L) are cost-effective for general concrete repair and screed overlay applications. Epoxy bonding agents (EGYBOND EP) are used where the highest adhesion strength is required — structural repairs, patch-and-overlay on bridge decks, and industrial flooring applications where service loads are high.

Epoxy bonding agents (EGYBOND EP) are two-component, solvent-free epoxy systems that cure chemically to form a high-strength, rigid bond at the interface between old and new concrete. They develop a high bond strength and are suitable where maximum structural performance is required. SBR latex bonding agents (EGYBOND SBR, EGYBOND L, EGYBOND Latex) are water-based products that improve adhesion by modifying the thin slurry coat applied to the substrate and improving the properties of mortars. They are easier to use, lower in cost, and suitable for most building repair and screed applications, but must be applied while still wet — if they dry before the fresh concrete is placed, they can act as a debonding layer.

Tile fixing and grouting products follow the relevant EN standards. For adhesives (EN 12004), the first character indicates type: C = cementitious, D = dispersion, R = reaction resin (epoxy); the number indicates performance class (1 = standard, 2 = improved), with letters such as T = slip-resistant (anti-slump) for vertical applications. EGYTILE C1 suits standard internal wall and floor tiling. EGYTILE C1T adds slip resistance for indoor and outdoor use. EGYTILE C2T is a reinforced grade for big-size porcelain, stone, and marble. EGYTILE R2 is a three-component, solvent-free epoxy tile adhesive for chemically resistant applications. EGYTILE CG2 is not an adhesive but a coloured, polymer-modified, cement-based tile grout (EN 13888, classified CG2) for filling the joints between tiles.

In most cases, a dedicated epoxy primer rather than a structural bonding agent is the correct product for priming concrete before an epoxy floor coating. Epoxy primers are formulated to penetrate and seal the concrete surface, provide a chemically compatible base for the topcoat, and allow air bubbles from the substrate to escape through their lower viscosity. Structural epoxy bonding agents like EGYBOND EP are optimised for concrete-to-concrete or concrete-to-mortar adhesion used in conjunction with cementitious overlays. For epoxy floor systems, consult CFC Egypt's technical team to ensure the primer and topcoat system are designed to work together.

Surface preparation is the single most important factor in achieving a durable bond. The substrate must be structurally sound — weak or carbonated concrete must be removed back to solid material. The surface must be free of oil, grease, paint, curing compound residue, dust, and loose particles. For epoxy bonding agents, shot blasting or grinding is recommended to expose aggregate and create a mechanical key; the surface should be dry or saturated surface-dry depending on the specific product instruction. For SBR slurry bonding, pre-wet the substrate to saturated surface-dry condition, apply the slurry vigorously with a stiff brush, and place the fresh concrete or mortar directly while the slurry is still wet and tacky.
