Patching Materials
Refractory patching and repair compounds — magnesia-based and alumino-silicate-based — for rapid repair of worn or damaged ladles, furnace linings, pouring spouts, and mould surfaces without the cost and downtime of a full reline.
Every metal-handling vessel in a ferrous foundry operates under extreme thermal, chemical, and mechanical stress. Ladle linings absorb thermal shock on every heat, are attacked by iron oxide and slag chemistry, and are eroded by the turbulence of the metal stream at the tap hole and impact zone. Unrepaired lining damage is a safety hazard and a metal quality risk — refractory fragments detached from a worn lining can become inclusions in the casting. CFC Egypt's EGYPATCH range provides rapid-setting refractory repair compounds for planned maintenance patching and emergency between-heat repair. EGYPATCH M is a magnesia-based compound for the most demanding applications — steel ladles, furnace hearths, and direct-metal-contact zones. EGYPATCH F is an alumino-silicate compound for iron service ladles, induction furnace lining repair, and less thermally severe environments. Both are manufactured in Sadat City, Egypt, and are available with application and dry-out guidance from our technical team.
01
What It Covers
CFC Egypt's patching material range addresses repair needs across the full range of metal-handling vessels and surfaces in ferrous foundries — from ladles and furnaces to mould surfaces and pouring equipment.
01
Magnesia Patching — EGYPATCH M
EGYPATCH M is a magnesia-based refractory patching compound for the highest-temperature and most chemically aggressive applications. It is specified for steel ladle lining repair, electric arc furnace tap hole repair, and zones in contact with basic slag chemistry where silica-based refractories would be rapidly dissolved. Magnesia refractories resist temperatures above 2000 °C and provide excellent resistance to iron oxide and calcium silicate slag attack — the primary chemical degradation mechanisms in steel and high-carbon iron ladle service.
02
Fireclay Patching — EGYPATCH F
EGYPATCH F is an alumino-silicate (fireclay-based) patching compound for grey iron and ductile iron service. It is used for ladle lining repair in iron foundries, induction furnace lining patching, and pouring channel and spout repair. The alumino-silicate chemistry provides adequate refractoriness for iron pouring temperatures (1350–1450 °C) and good resistance to thermal cycling. EGYPATCH F is more economical than magnesia-based compounds for iron service where the extreme high-temperature resistance of magnesia is not required.
03
Surface Patching — EGYPART 220
EGYPART 220 is a refractory patching material for mould surface repair and localised refractory maintenance where a workable, mouldable consistency and a smooth surface finish after application are priorities. It is used for repairing damaged mould surfaces before the pour, patching worn areas of permanent moulds, and local repair of furnace and ladle surfaces where the repair volume is small and ease of application is important.
04
Planned Maintenance vs Emergency Patching
Refractory patching is most effective when applied as part of a planned maintenance schedule rather than only in response to visible damage. Planned maintenance patching — applied to high-wear zones at defined intervals — extends lining service life, reduces unplanned downtime, and prevents the safety risks associated with allowing lining wear to reach a critical threshold. CFC Egypt can support the development of a ladle maintenance patching programme matched to your foundry's metal type, vessel size, and production rate.
02
Where It's Used
Refractory patching materials are used wherever metal-handling equipment must be maintained in service between full relining operations. These are the principal application areas in ferrous foundries.
Ladle Lining Maintenance
Pouring ladles in both iron and steel foundries are the primary application for patching compounds. The metal impact zone — where the metal stream first contacts the ladle base — and the slag line zone near the rim experience the highest wear rates and require the most frequent patching. EGYPATCH M is used in steel ladle service; EGYPATCH F in grey and ductile iron service. Between-heat patching at these zones is standard practice in high-throughput foundries to extend lining life and prevent breakthrough.
Induction Furnace Lining Repair
Induction furnace linings are subject to thermal cycling, chemical attack by metal and slag, and erosion by the metal movement driven by induction stirring. Local erosion at the slag line and at the tap hole approaches are the most common wear sites. EGYPATCH F can be applied to these localised wear zones during planned maintenance windows to restore the lining profile and extend service before a scheduled full reline is required.
Pouring Channels & Spouts
Pouring channels, troughs, and spouts that guide metal from the ladle into the mould are subjected to continuous erosion by the metal stream and thermal shock on every pour. Worn channel surfaces allow turbulent flow that promotes slag and oxide entrainment in the metal, increasing casting defect rates. Regular patching of worn channel surfaces with EGYPATCH F maintains the smooth flow geometry needed for clean, turbulence-free metal transfer.
Mould Surface Repair
Sand moulds damaged during assembly, transport, or pattern withdrawal can be repaired with refractory patching material before the pour if the damage is localised. EGYPART 220 is used for this purpose — applied to the damaged area, shaped to the original mould profile, and allowed to harden before coating application. This avoids the cost of remoulding and allows the damaged mould to be recovered for production.
Permanent Mould Maintenance
Cast iron permanent moulds (gravity dies) used for aluminium or copper-alloy casting develop surface cracks and erosion channels through thermal fatigue. Local repair of these defects with appropriate refractory patching compounds extends the service life of the mould and avoids the cost of complete replacement. Contact our technical team for the correct patching compound for your specific permanent mould material and service conditions.
