Release & Parting Agents

Release and parting agents applied to patterns, core boxes, and permanent moulds to ensure clean, damage-free separation of the mould or casting from the tool, preserving mould cavity accuracy and protecting pattern and tooling surfaces from abrasion, adhesion, and moisture.

Every time a pattern is drawn from a sand mould, the parting agent is the difference between a clean, accurate mould impression and a torn, distorted cavity that produces a defective casting. In a high-production green-sand foundry, the pattern may be drawn hundreds of times per shift — each draw must release cleanly, without sand adhesion to the pattern face, without deformation of the mould cavity, and without build-up on the pattern surface that would gradually change its dimensions. CFC Egypt's EGYPART release and parting agent range provides reliable, consistent release across the range of pattern materials — wood, resin, and metal — and moulding systems used in ferrous foundries. EGYPART 205 and EGYPART 263 are formulated for minimal film thickness, long-lasting surface coverage, and compatibility with the mould coatings and binder systems used in ferrous casting. Both are manufactured at our Sadat City plant.

ما يغطيها

EGYPART release and parting agents address four principal release scenarios in ferrous foundry moulding and core making — each with different tooling, sand types, and production cycle demands.

01

Pattern Release — EGYPART 205

EGYPART 205 is a release and parting agent for sand-casting patterns — wooden, resin, or metal — used in green-sand and no-bake moulding. Applied to the pattern surface before moulding, it creates a thin, non-adhesive film that allows clean withdrawal of the pattern from the compacted sand mould without tearing or deformation of the mould impression. EGYPART 205 is compatible with the mould coatings and sand binder systems used in ferrous foundries and does not contaminate the mould surface.

02

Core Box Release — EGYPART 263

EGYPART 263 is formulated for core box release — applied to the internal surfaces of core boxes before sand filling and compaction to allow clean stripping of the bonded or shell sand core without adhesion or surface tearing. Core box release is particularly demanding because the core must be stripped from a complex three-dimensional cavity and must emerge structurally intact, with no surface tears or cracks that would compromise its dimensional accuracy or strength during the pour.

03

Permanent Mould Release

In permanent mould (gravity die) casting — used for aluminium, copper, and some iron alloys — the release agent must withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles as the die is used continuously in production. The EGYPART range includes grades suitable for permanent mould applications where the release agent must act as both a parting layer and a thermal barrier between the hot die and the casting metal. Consistent release agent application extends die life and produces consistent casting surface quality.

04

Tooling Protection

In addition to enabling clean pattern draw, parting agents protect wooden and resin patterns from moisture absorption from green sand, which can cause swelling, warping, and dimensional change over time. Metal patterns benefit from the corrosion protection offered by the parting agent film between uses. Consistent parting agent application as part of routine pattern maintenance is a simple and effective way to extend pattern service life and maintain dimensional accuracy over the full pattern campaign.

مكان استخدامه

Release and parting agents are used in every type of sand foundry and permanent mould operation. These are the most common applications in ferrous casting.

Green-Sand Moulding Lines

High-production green-sand foundries producing grey iron automotive, pipe, and engineering castings rely on reliable parting agent performance to maintain consistent mould quality across thousands of pattern draws per shift. In mechanised moulding lines, parting agent application is integrated into the moulding cycle. Clean, consistent pattern release prevents mould surface tears that would require manual repair or result in casting surface defects.

No-Bake Foundries

In no-bake (chemically bonded) moulding, the sand develops strong adhesion to pattern surfaces as the binder begins to cure during sand compaction. An effective parting agent that separates the pattern surface from the sand before adhesion can develop is essential. EGYPART products provide reliable release in no-bake systems where the aggressive adhesion of the partially cured binder makes parting agent selection and application particularly critical for clean pattern withdrawal.

Core Making Operations

Core box release is critical for the production of dimensionally accurate cores. Adhesion between the core and the core box surface damages the core face and alters the core dimensions — both of which degrade the internal surface quality of the casting. For shell cores, the core box is heated and the release agent must withstand repeated thermal cycling while maintaining consistent release performance. EGYPART 263 is applied to core box surfaces before each shot in cold-box and warm-box core making.

Centrifugal Pipe Casting

In centrifugal pipe casting, the steel spinning mould must be coated before each cast to provide a release layer and a thermal barrier between the mould and the liquid iron. The coating must apply evenly at speed, form a stable layer during rotation, and release the solidified pipe cleanly when the mould is extracted. Release and parting agent selection for centrifugal casting is matched to the mould temperature, rotation speed, and pipe alloy.

Pattern Shop Maintenance

Patterns represent a significant tooling investment — high-quality match plates and corebox sets are precision manufactured and expensive to replace. Regular parting agent application as part of a pattern care programme protects wooden patterns from moisture-induced warping, metal patterns from corrosion, and resin patterns from surface abrasion. A clean, properly maintained pattern surface produces consistent, high-quality mould impressions over the full pattern service campaign.

الأسئلة المتداولة

Technical questions on release and parting agents for ferrous casting answered plainly. For product selection and application guidance, contact our technical team.

A parting agent is applied to the surface of patterns and core boxes before sand compaction to prevent the moulded sand from adhering to the tool when it is withdrawn. It creates a thin, non-adhesive barrier between the pattern surface and the sand, allowing clean withdrawal, preserving the accuracy of the mould impression, and protecting the pattern from abrasive wear and moisture absorption. Without a parting agent, sand adheres to the pattern face, tearing the mould cavity surface and producing castings with rough, inaccurate surfaces.

Pattern parting agents are used on sand-casting patterns and core boxes to prevent adhesion between the pattern and the bonded or green sand during the draw. Permanent mould release agents are used on cast iron or steel gravity dies and must withstand higher temperatures through repeated casting cycles, acting as both a release layer and a thermal barrier. EGYPART 205 and EGYPART 263 serve these applications across sand and permanent moulding systems. Contact our technical team for grade selection matched to your tooling material and process.

The parting agent applied to the pattern influences the quality of the mould surface impression that forms the casting face. A parting agent applied too thickly or that builds up on the pattern over multiple cycles introduces texture and dimensional inaccuracy into the mould cavity. A well-formulated parting agent leaves only a very thin film on the pattern that does not measurably affect cavity dimensions or surface finish while providing reliable sand release. EGYPART products are formulated for minimal film thickness and consistent release without build-up.

Application frequency depends on the pattern material, moulding sand type, production rate, and the specific parting agent used. In green-sand moulding, parting agents are typically applied every moulding cycle or every few cycles. In no-bake moulding, the chemically bonded sand is more aggressively adhesive and parting agent application before each draw is standard. Pattern boards used in mechanised green-sand lines may need replenishment less frequently. EGYPART application instructions specify recommended frequency and method for each grade.

CFC Egypt supplies EGYPART 205 and EGYPART 263 — release and parting agents for sand-casting patterns, core boxes, and permanent moulds in ferrous foundry applications. The two grades are formulated for different application methods and tooling types. Contact our technical team with your pattern material (wood, resin, or metal), moulding system (green sand, no-bake, or permanent mould), and production rate for a grade recommendation and application guidance.
