Grey iron shrinks by approximately 3%, ductile iron by 3\u20134%, and steel by 5\u20137% by volume. Without sufficient liquid metal fed into the last-to-solidify regions during this contraction, the result is shrinkage porosity \u2014 internal voids that weaken the casting \u2014 or visible surface sinks at heavy sections.
