Division 02 — Construction / Admixtures

Admixtures for Mortar & Concrete

Concrete and mortar admixtures are chemical additives incorporated into the mix at the batching stage to modify workability, setting time, strength development, durability, and permeability — allowing engineers to tailor fresh and hardened concrete performance to specific structural and site conditions.

CFC Egypt's EGYMIX admixture range covers the full spectrum of concrete chemistry needs: polycarboxylate-based superplasticisers for high-performance and self-compacting concrete, naphthalene-based plasticisers for general-purpose ready-mix, lignosulphonate retarders for extended workability in Egypt's hot climate, set accelerators for early-strength applications, integral waterproofing admixtures for water-retaining structures, and expanding admixtures for precision grout work. All products are manufactured at our Sadat City facility to consistent quality standards.

01

Ce qu'il couvre

Admixtures for mortar and concrete span five functional groups, each addressing a distinct performance requirement from fresh-mix workability through to long-term durability.

01

Plasticisers & Superplasticisers

Water-reducing admixtures that improve workability without increasing the water-cement ratio. Standard plasticisers (EGYMIX F series) offer 5–15% water reduction; superplasticisers (EGYMIX G series) achieve 15–30% reduction, enabling high-strength and self-compacting concrete at low w/c ratios. Polycarboxylate ether (PCE) and naphthalene sulphonate formulations are available.

02

Retarders

Setting retarders extend the workable life of concrete in high ambient temperatures — critical on Egyptian and MENA sites where air temperatures routinely exceed 35 °C during pours. The EGYMIX D series delays initial set, reducing the risk of cold joints in large pours and giving placing crews sufficient time to finish and compact the concrete properly before stiffening begins.

03

Accelerators

Accelerating admixtures speed up cement hydration, shortening the time to initial set and increasing early compressive strength. They are used in repair mortars where traffic or load must be restored quickly, in precast production to accelerate demoulding, and in cold-weather concreting where low temperatures slow hydration. Non-chloride accelerators are used where reinforcement corrosion risk must be avoided.

04

Waterproofing Admixtures

Integral waterproofing admixtures (EGYMIX WP) are blended into the mix to reduce capillary porosity and block water migration under hydrostatic pressure. Unlike surface-applied membranes, they protect the full concrete cross-section, making them the preferred solution for water-retaining structures, basements, tunnels, and marine applications where the concrete itself must serve as the primary water barrier.

05

Expanding & Fibre Admixtures

Expanding admixtures (EGYPAND series) compensate for shrinkage in grouts, repair mortars, and structural connections, ensuring crack-free, fully bonded fills. Fibre admixtures — polypropylene (EGYFIBER) and glass fibre (EGYGLASS FIBER) — are dispersed through the mix to control plastic shrinkage cracking, improve impact resistance, and reduce crack widths in slabs, walls, and shotcrete.

02

Where They're Used

Concrete admixtures are specified across virtually every segment of civil and structural construction. The following applications represent the highest-volume uses of admixture technology in the Egyptian and regional market.

Ready-Mix Concrete

Ready-mix plants rely on plasticisers and superplasticisers to deliver specified slump at the point of discharge, compensating for water absorbed by aggregate and for slump loss during transit in hot weather. Retarders extend the open time window, ensuring that concrete placed at the far end of a long pour remains workable and does not develop cold joints. EGYMIX G and D products are directly suited to ready-mix batching.

Precast & Prestressed Concrete

Precast factories demand consistent, high early-strength concrete for rapid mould turnover. Superplasticisers allow very low water-cement ratios that deliver 28-day strengths of 50 MPa and above; combined with accelerators, they enable demoulding within hours of casting. CFC Egypt admixtures support precast applications including bridge beams, hollow-core slabs, drainage elements, and façade panels.

High-Performance Concrete

High-performance concrete (HPC) with compressive strengths above 60 MPa requires precise water reduction and low water-cement ratios that are only achievable with polycarboxylate superplasticisers. The EGYMIX G 700-series products are designed for HPC mix designs used in high-rise cores, bridge decks, and transfer slabs where design strength, durability, and crack resistance are all critical.

Hot-Climate & Mass Concrete Pours

In Egypt and across MENA, summer ambient temperatures above 40 °C can reduce concrete workable life to under 30 minutes without chemical intervention. Retarders from the EGYMIX D range extend initial set time to allow controlled placement in raft foundations, mat slabs, and large walls where continuous pours must be completed over several hours to avoid cold joints and ensure monolithic structural behaviour.

Water-Retaining & Below-Grade Structures

Tanks, reservoirs, basements, and tunnels require concrete that resists water penetration under sustained hydrostatic pressure. Integral waterproofing admixtures (EGYMIX WP) are incorporated at the mixing stage to produce dense, low-permeability concrete that retains its waterproofing performance throughout the structure's service life, independent of surface condition or future maintenance cycles.

Questions fréquemment posées

Concrete admixtures are chemical compounds added to a concrete or mortar mix — beyond the standard cement, aggregate, and water — to modify one or more properties of the fresh or hardened mix. They are used to reduce water demand while maintaining workability (plasticisers and superplasticisers), to control setting time in hot or cold weather (retarders and accelerators), to improve durability in freeze-thaw environments (air-entraining agents), and to reduce permeability and water ingress (waterproofing admixtures). Admixtures allow engineers to tailor concrete performance to specific site and structural requirements without changing the fundamental mix design.

Plasticisers (water reducers) typically allow a water reduction of 5–15% while maintaining the same workability, or increase slump by up to 100 mm at the same water-cement ratio. Superplasticisers (high-range water reducers) achieve water reductions of 15–30% and can dramatically increase slump — from stiff to flowing — without segregation. Superplasticisers are essential for high-performance concrete (HPC) and self-compacting concrete (SCC) where very low water-cement ratios are required for strength and durability. CFC Egypt's EGYMIX G series covers superplasticisers; the EGYMIX F series covers standard and mid-range plasticisers.

Retarders slow the hydration reaction between cement and water, extending the setting time. They are used in hot-climate pours — common in Egypt and MENA — to prevent premature stiffening during placement and finishing, and in large pours where extended workability is needed. Accelerators speed up hydration, reducing initial and final set times. This is useful in repair applications where early strength is critical, or where formwork needs to be struck quickly. Dosage and type must be matched to the cement chemistry, ambient temperature, and target setting window.

A waterproofing admixture is blended into the concrete mix and acts throughout the full cross-section of the element, reducing the capillary pore structure and blocking pathways for water migration under hydrostatic pressure. A surface-applied membrane sits on the outside face of the concrete and can be compromised by substrate cracking, puncture, or delamination. Integral waterproofing admixtures are preferred where the concrete itself must be the primary water-resistant barrier — water-retaining structures, basements, tanks, and tunnels — because they remain effective even if the concrete surface is damaged.

Yes, admixtures are regularly combined, but compatibility must be verified before use. A superplasticiser and a retarder are frequently combined for large hot-weather pours. Air-entraining agents can be used alongside water reducers. However, some combinations can cause unintended interactions such as rapid stiffening or loss of air entrainment. CFC Egypt recommends conducting trial mixes with the specific cement, aggregate, and admixture combination planned for site, and our technical team supports mix design and compatibility testing.
