Waterproofing Systems

Construction waterproofing is the application of barrier materials to concrete and masonry to prevent water ingress — spanning liquid-applied membranes, crystalline coatings that self-seal through the concrete matrix, cementitious slurries, bituminous products, polyurethane injection resins, and surface water-repellents.

CFC Egypt manufactures a complete waterproofing range at our Sadat City plant, covering every exposure condition from buried foundations under sustained hydrostatic pressure to exposed roofs and water-retaining structures. Our systems are engineered for the climate, substrate quality, and construction practice common across Egypt and the wider MENA region — high ambient temperatures, aggressive groundwater, and rapid pour-to-use timelines that demand fast-setting, high-reliability chemistry. From crystalline coatings for underground concrete to bituminous waterproofers for flat roofs, we supply the right system for the application.

01

What It Covers

Waterproofing chemistry spans five technology families, each suited to a distinct exposure condition, substrate type, or construction method. Selecting the right system requires matching the product chemistry to the water pressure, application side, and expected substrate movement.

01

Crystalline & Cementitious Coatings

Reactive crystalline systems (EGYPROOF CR, EGYPROOF CS) penetrate into concrete capillaries and form insoluble crystals that permanently block water migration under hydrostatic pressure up to several bars. Polymer-modified cementitious slurries provide a dense physical barrier on positive and negative faces of water-retaining structures. Both technologies are compatible with potable water contact.

02

Bituminous Products

Solvent-based and water-based bituminous coatings (EGYBIT series) provide cost-effective waterproofing for below-grade foundations, retaining walls, pile caps, and flat roofs. Elastomeric bitumen formulations accommodate substrate movement and thermal cycling without cracking, making them suitable for structures where minor differential settlement is expected after application.

03

Liquid Acrylic Membranes

Brush- or roller-applied acrylic waterproofing membranes (EGYBRUSH series) form a flexible, seamless coat on roofs, balconies, and exposed horizontal surfaces. Elastomeric grades bridge hairline cracks and tolerate thermal movement; modified variants (EGYBRUSH M) are formulated for negative-side application on interior walls subject to active moisture transmission from ground contact.

04

Injection Resins & Crack Sealants

Polyurethane injection resins (EGYSEAL INJECTION) are pumped under low pressure into cracks, construction joints, and honeycombed sections where surface-applied products cannot reach. On contact with moisture the resin foams and expands to fill voids completely, stopping active water flow in tunnels, basements, and buried concrete structures. Plug mortars (EGYPLUG, EGYSTOP) arrest high-velocity leaks in seconds before injection works begin.

05

Water-Repellent Surface Treatments

Silane/siloxane water-repellent treatments penetrate the concrete or masonry matrix and react with the substrate to line capillary pores with a hydrophobic layer that repels liquid water while allowing vapour transmission. Applied to facades, bridge decks, and exposed concrete elements they reduce chloride ingress and carbonation rates without forming a visible surface film, preserving the appearance of architectural concrete.

02

Where It's Used

Water ingress is one of the most common and costly causes of structural deterioration. Waterproofing systems are applied at the construction stage to prevent damage and are used to remediate existing structures where moisture protection has failed.

Basements & Underground Structures

Below-grade slabs, retaining walls, lift pits, and underground car parks are exposed to sustained ground-water pressure, seasonal water-table variation, and aggressive soil chemistry. Crystalline and bituminous systems applied to the external face during construction, combined with negative-side treatments where post-construction access is required, provide durable protection against the hydrostatic pressures common in Egyptian deltaic soils.

Water Tanks & Reservoirs

Potable water tanks, irrigation reservoirs, and wastewater holding structures require waterproofing systems that are both watertight under sustained positive water pressure and chemically inert in contact with stored water. Crystalline coatings and approved epoxy linings from CFC Egypt's range are formulated for these conditions, providing long-term containment without leaching compounds that could affect water quality or treatment chemistry.

Roofs & Balconies

Flat and low-slope roofs in Egypt's climate experience extreme UV exposure and wide diurnal temperature swings that cause surface coatings to fatigue quickly. Elastomeric acrylic membranes and reinforced bituminous systems from CFC Egypt's EGYBRUSH and EGYBIT ranges are formulated to tolerate this thermal cycling, remain flexible at low winter temperatures, and resist UV degradation through the service life of the roof assembly.

Foundations & Pile Caps

Strip foundations, raft slabs, and pile caps set in aggressive saline or sulfate-bearing soils require waterproofing that also acts as a chemical barrier to ground contamination. Bituminous coatings applied to the blinding and formed faces of foundations reduce sulfate attack on concrete and chloride ingress to reinforcement, extending the service life of the structural elements below ground.

Wet Areas & Sanitary Rooms

Bathrooms, kitchens, plant rooms, and swimming pool surrounds are high-humidity zones where repeated wetting causes moisture to migrate through substrate joints and penetrations. Flexible cementitious slurry coatings and polyurethane membranes applied beneath tile finishes prevent this moisture from reaching the structural slab, protecting both the structure below and the finishes above from water-related deterioration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical and commercial questions on construction waterproofing answered plainly. For a specific application or product recommendation, contact our technical team.

Construction waterproofing is the application of barrier materials and treatments to concrete, masonry, and structural elements to prevent water ingress. It covers liquid-applied membranes, cementitious coatings, crystalline systems that grow inward through the concrete matrix to block capillaries, bituminous products for below-grade and roof applications, polyurethane injection resins for crack sealing, and water-repellent surface treatments. The system selected depends on the substrate, water pressure, and whether the application is positive-side (water-facing) or negative-side (interior).

Cementitious waterproofing is a polymer-modified cement coating applied to the surface of concrete to fill pores and reduce permeability — it relies on a continuous physical barrier and is vulnerable to cracking if the substrate moves. Crystalline waterproofing uses reactive chemicals (typically cement, quartz, and active silicates) that penetrate the concrete matrix and form insoluble crystals inside the capillary pores, permanently blocking water migration even under hydrostatic pressure. Crystalline systems are self-sealing to minor cracks and remain effective even if the surface is damaged, making them the preferred choice for water-retaining structures such as tanks, reservoirs, and basement walls.

For basements and below-grade structures subject to hydrostatic pressure, the most robust approach combines positive-side waterproofing applied to the water-facing exterior face during construction with crystalline waterproofing on the interior. Bituminous coatings and polyurethane liquid membranes are effective for positive-side application; EGYBIT W and EGYPROOF CR are designed for this use. Where access is limited to the interior only, negative-side crystalline systems such as EGYBRUSH M can be applied directly to damp concrete to stop active water ingress without excavation.

Yes — cementitious crystalline coatings are inherently non-toxic once cured and are widely used for lining drinking-water reservoirs and swimming pools. Epoxy-based coatings such as EGYPOX 1175 provide a chemically inert, smooth lining resistant to chlorine and disinfectants used in water treatment. The product must be selected and applied in accordance with the relevant local standards for potable water contact. CFC Egypt's technical team can advise on the appropriate system and application procedure for your project.
